Landscapes in the City: A Stroll in Central Park
Photos from the Park
This tour focuses on the natural and man-made beauties of Central Park. We will admire the Literary Walk with its magnificent elm trees, Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, the Boat House, and Sheep Meadow. This tour is ideal for families with children, since Central Park has some of the best playgrounds in New York, as well as the Central Park Zoo and Carousel.
Central Park is the largest surviving piece of open space in Manhattan, but its landscape and scenery were completely man-made, based on designs by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Contruction started in 1856 and entailed shifting 10 million cartloads of terrain; planting almost 5 million trees and over 800 varieties of plants; and half a million cubic yards of topsoil were spread over the existing poor soil.
Each season is unique in the park. Come enjoy the blossoms and flowers of the spring, or its verdant shade in the summer. The fall brings a riot of bright, autumn colors, while winter enchants with the sculptural splendor of bare trees and open vistas.
